How Kybella® Injections Work

Kybella® is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, which is a cytolytic agent.  Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of adipocytes (fat cells). Injections of this solution can help dissolve fat in unwanted areas such as the chin and neck.  These areas are usually not affected by weight loss; often the neck contour is hereditary, and patients have a hard time slimming this area without cosmetic treatment. Kybella® is FDA approved as an effective way to reduce the bulk of submental fat and provide a more defined neck contour.

Injections are placed directly into the submental or chin fat with the use of a very small needle, destroying localized fat deposits. Treatment is quick, has little downtime and does not involve surgery.

Why Patients Love Kybella®

Kybella® will help you get rid of that unwanted bulky contour of submental fat permanently! Men and women love the way that their neck looks slimmer, longer, and younger.  Shirt collars look better without that tight fit and excess bulk of the double chin.  No more hiding behind scarves or turtlenecks. Wear that great necklace with confidence.

Your procedure is quick visit to the spa; it normally takes less than 30 minutes to treat the area from walk in to check out.  It is great to reduce the bulky submental fat that is not affected by diet or exercise programs.  Once the fat cells are destroyed, they cannot accumulate or store fat again.

Kybella® vs. Coolsculpting and Liposuction

Kybella®® is a quick injection, placed directly in the area where excess submental fat has accumulated, under the chin. Kybella®® is currently approved for use only under the chin and along the jaw. Patients can also choose Coolsculpting for the neck and chin. During this treatment, a hand piece suctions skin into the applicator, which creates a proprietary cooling effect; this lasts for up to an hour. The body then metabolizes the treated fat cells.  Coolsculpting retreatment is recommended every three months until the desired outcome is achieved.

Liposuction is a surgical option for instant removal of the adipose tissue. Kybella® is non-surgical.  There is no need for anesthesia or post treatment garments. Some patients prefer to be treated with liposuction for initial debulking of the area and then tweak those areas that need specific targeting with Kybella®. We call that the one-two punch!

Discover Whether You’re Qualified for Kybella® Treatment!

Have a consultation with Joiner or Dr. Alderman about being a candidate for Kybella®. We can help you decide if this is the right treatment for you. Patients with severe skin laxity or prominent platysmal bands are not recommended for treatment as it can result in an aesthetically undesired outcome.

Common Questions about Kybella® to Correct a Double Chin

Are the injections comfortable?

We have great options for making your procedure highly comfortable.  Some patients prefer to use numbing cream; ice packs also help.  The injections are provided with a very small needle that gently pierces the skin into the fatty area. Some patients feel a transient soreness at the jaw that resolves shortly. Warmth to the area is normal.  Swelling is a natural occurrence of the metabolic process.

How much does it cost?

For the average patient needing two to three vials, the cost is $650 a vial. We have packages for treatment to transformation.

Is Kybella® safe?

Kybella® is FDA approved to treat submental fat. Let either Alderman or Dr. Joiner know if you have had: any surgery in the affected area, any medical conditions of the neck, open sores, or trouble swallowing. Tell Dr. Joiner or Dr. Alderman what medications you take. Rare side effects include jaw nerve injury, hair loss and tissue death.

What is recovery like?

You can resume normal activity immediately after treatment.  Some people experience transient warmth and erythema from the metabolic process.  Swelling is different across patients; most of the swelling resolves within the first week. Some patients experience some firmness to the injection sites.

Generally, the swelling resolves to a minimum after two to three days.  Treatment on a Friday is perfect since much of the swelling will be gone after the weekend.  Some people can feel a “jiggle” of their neck with exercise. This is to be expected and OK

Is there anything I can do to support best results?

Kybella® begins to start the metabolic process immediately after injection. It depends on the body’s lymphatic system to facilitate results.  Lymphatic massage is encouraged.  Massaging the area with a neck firming lotion is helpful. There is no need to wear a garment. Some patients like to take Arnica or Bromelain supplements to keep any swelling from the metabolic process to a minimum.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on the amount of fat in the area. The typical treatment is two to three vials of Kybella®, monthly for three to four treatments. A maximum of five vials for six treatments can be performed

What skin types can be treated?

All skin types are eligible for treatment, including patients with medium to dark skin tones.

How long do the results last?

Here’s the great news: the fat cells that are targeted are destroyed permanently!
