Many of us have felt the disappointment of looking in the mirror and not liking what we see – signs of aging like lax skin, a dull complexion, blemishes, scars, and other signs of wear and tear. There’s nothing wrong with the concept of aging with grace. But there’s also no harm in retaining your youthful beauty for as long as you can!

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Amy Alderman offers two incredible non-surgical anti-aging facial treatments at her North Atlanta Medical Spa. Microneedling and chemical peels are non-invasive options to rejuvenate tired, dull skin to a radiant glow.

Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling has been in use for over 100 years and has evolved consistently since then. Ongoing research and development have made the procedure one of the most used minimally invasive skin-toning treatments available. Clinical studies suggest up to an 80% improvement, boosting collagen regeneration over several months.

The procedure entails stamping fine needles into underlying skin layers. Though it’s primarily a facial treatment, you can have it done nearly anywhere on the body.

The needles pierce the skin, causing micro-wounds. These punctures activate the body’s natural healing response, encouraging the synthesis of your skin’s connective tissues – collagen and elastin, to increase tone and pliability. The result is a more resilient, supple, and smooth skin presence. In addition, the tiny punctures allow increased absorption of topical products to enhance results.

To start, we’ll apply a medical-grade numbing cream to your face to make the procedure nearly painless. Though you will see instant improvement, up to three sessions at three to four-week apart is optimal, with regular maintenance to continue your improved skin appearance.

Microneedling is perfect if you suffer from sagging or aging skin. In addition, the treatment is excellent for tightening areas of lax skin after pregnancy or extreme weight loss.

Microneedling can help enhance the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and other blemishes like open pores, stretch marks, acne, and superficial scarring.

Dr. Alderman offers two types of microneedling. Vivace RF Microneedling incorporates advanced radiofrequency technology and LED lights with the conventional treatment. You also have the option of a more traditional technique performed with the SkinPen device.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels resurface the skin by applying medical-grade chemicals to break down and eliminate old surface layers to reveal fresh, underlying skin.  The treatment improves texture, reduces fine lines and pigmentation, and minimizes scarring. In addition, chemical peels contain natural acids and ingredients to exfoliate tired and dull skin and stimulate elastin and collagen production, revealing a smoother, brighter complexion.

While effective for the skin surface, chemical peels do not lift or tone sagging skin.

Which Option Is Better for You?

If your primary concerns include uneven skin tone, fine lines, scarring, and dull, tired skin, both these choices offer a more refined and luminous skin at an affordable cost. Your decision will depend primarily on skin tone and elasticity, but additional factors include downtime, cost, and treatment duration.

If you struggle with sagging skin, substantial scarring, and deeper folds, Dr. Alderman recommends microneedling to address surface and deeper connective tissue problems. In many cases, a combination of both techniques provides optimal outcomes, which you can discuss during your consultation.
