Do You Need a Facelift? Ask Dr. Alderman
When patients have come to a point in their treatment plans where dermal fillers are not providing their desired changes, Dr. Aldermann discusses his or her desired goals and specific areas of concern. Her approach is to enhance the patient’s natural beauty, not overly correct them whereby they begin to lose the facial characteristics everyone loves about them. We can all name well-known movie stars who look completely different after their facelifts. That is what Dr. Alderman wants to avoid. She believes that appropriate timing and a conservative plan will create a rejuvenated, natural appearance that pleases both the patient and his or her loved ones who in particular cherish the inherent beauty of the patient.

What Can a Facelift Do for You?
Current facelift techniques prevent the overly tight look of the past, so your facelift will leave you looking naturally refreshed.
A facelift can:
- Improve sagging jowls
- Improve sunken cheeks
- Tighten loose, sagging skin and muscles from the mid-face to the chin
- Soften creases and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Help you look naturally younger
It’s important to note that a facelift improves signs of aging from the midface to the chin. If you have loose skin on your neck, you can benefit from a combination facelift and neck lift. If you have sagging eyebrows, sagging upper eyelids, or undereye bags, you may wish to have a blepharoplasty or brow lift concurrently with your facelift for an overall facial rejuvenation. With Dr. Alderman’s help, there is no shortage of ways to look your best.
What Type of Facelift is Best? Your Options for Facial Surgery
Facelift surgery or rhytidectomy is best for patients with significant signs of aging from the midface to the chin. If you have sagging skin on your neck, above your eyebrows, on upper eyelids, or pronounced under eye bags, additional procedures may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. Dr. Alderman’s and Dr. Joiner’s patients can choose from the following procedures to achieve their desired results:
A traditional facelift involves incisions hidden behind your hairline and extending behind your ears. This technique provides the most comprehensive correction for signs of aging.
A mini-facelift or MACS lift is best for those with moderate signs of aging. These patients may have some sagging in the lower face, but their skin still has good elasticity. This is a good option for those who wish to take proactive action to avoid development of significant aesthetic issues.
The main advantage to a mini-facelift is that the incisions are shorter, and recovery time is faster.

What Happens During a Facelift?
Most facelifts take about 3 hours and require general anesthesia. Hospitalization is not usually necessary but is recommended to decrease the risk post-treatment complications. After the incisions are made, the skin and underlying tissues are lifted for a naturally tighter, more youthful look. Permanent sutures may be used to hold the tissues in the new position. While a bandage will be applied to the treatment areas, you will be able to talk and eat.
What to Expect During Facelift Recovery
Most of our patients are surprised how comfortable they feel after their facelift. We can provide a pain medication prescription, but many patients find that Tylenol is enough for a couple of days. After 24 hours, we will ask you to walk several times throughout the day to encourage circulation and prevent blood clotting.
As long as your work is not strenuous, you should be able to return to work within 1-2 weeks. You should take it easy for 2-3 weeks, however, and avoid strenuous exercise and lifting for about a month.
A facelift causes some bruising and swelling, but these should improve significantly within a week or two. Women often use makeup at that point to cover any remaining discoloration.
You will look younger right away, but the swelling will take time to gradually resolve, after which you can see your final results.
Most importantly, Dr. Alderman and Dr. Joiner will monitor your progress in follow-up examinations and will be available to answer your questions as you heal.
