Cheek Fillers in Atlanta and Buckhead – Cheek Augmentation

Once those 40 candles crowd our birthday cakes, we all begin to lose volume in our cheeks. Ironically, those who stay fit and have a lower body weight often look older than those with a higher percentage of body fat. The difference is in their cheeks!

Filling the midface and sculpting the cheekbones with transferred fat or hyaluronic acid products, such as Restylane® or Voluma, instantly creates a more youthful appearance. These products refresh your natural appearance subtly and safely. Better yet, most also stimulate your natural collagen production. Improvements grow over the coming months, even after the initial product has produced its immediate effects on your skin.

This page will help you decide whether cheek fillers are your path to looking younger. If you have specific questions you’d like answered quickly, please feel free to call us at 470-381-3610.

Dermal Cheek Fillers: Small Changes, Big Results

Young faces tend to have fullness in the mid-face and highlighted, contoured cheekbones.

Dermal fillers are the safest and easiest way to restore contour and volume to the cheeks. Several fillers are available, all lasting about a year. They are well tolerated by patients who report little to no downtime after the procedures.

Dr. Alderman and Dr. Joiner perform all dermal filler procedures, rather than a nurse injector, in order to ensure the best results. They also want to be on hand to answer any questions and lend the artistry that comes with decades of experience working with skin, bone, and muscle.

What Cheek Filler Treatment is Right for You?

Deciding which cosmetic treatment method is best for you should be a discussion between you and Dr. Alderman or Dr. Joiner during your initial consultation. Several products are available, and they will spend time reviewing the best options given your facial anatomy, medical history and goals.

The most common cheek fillers are:

  • Restylane® Lyft
  • Voluma
  • Sculptra®

Restylane® Lyft and Voluma are hyaluronic acid fillers. Both products are available in a 1cc syringe and look like a clear gel. Approved for the cheeks and midface areas, Restylane® Lyft and Voluma provide instantaneous volume and are typically re-injected yearly to maintain a stable result. The amount of product needed per cheek depends on your facial volume, which in turn is impacted by your age, weight, and genetics. Dr. Alderman or Dr. Joiner will conservatively determine which amount is right for you.

Sculptra® is used to augment similar areas but the mechanism of action is different. Its active ingredient is poly-lactic acid rather than Restylane® and Voluma’s hyaluronic acid. Unlike Restylane® and Voluma, the wrinkle filling witnessed immediately after injection dissipates in a day.

With Sculptra®, it’s not the matrix that matters, but the slower-acting acid. Sculptra® stimulates your body’s collagen growth, requiring three treatments spaced six weeks apart. It typically takes three months to see the full effects, but once the desired volume is achieved, repeated treatment will not be necessary for two to three years. The body will process Juvéderm® and Voluma’s gel base faster than it does its own collagen.

For some patients, a combination of both a hyaluronic acid filler along with Sculptra® can provide both immediate and long-term results.

Cheek Fillers vs. Cheek Implants

Until a few years ago, those looking to accentuate their cheekbones sought silicone cheek implants. While cheek implants do add dramatic contour, they most often also involve general anesthesia and scarring.

While cheek implants can improve facial structure by adding dimension, placing an implant is an invasive surgery. Dr. Alderman and Dr. Joiner are highly conscious about scar placement; if injectables will create the desired effect, she will recommend this procedure as opposed to facial implant surgery.

Patients should consider that, while implants are permanent and do not require touch-ups, injectables are a worthwhile investment that prevents the need for surgery while helping you look and feel younger. Cheek implants may be better suited for patients undergoing comprehensive facial surgery (facelift, chin implants, brow lift) as opposed to restoring volume lost to the aging process.

The Cheek Injection Procedure and Recovery

To add volume to the midface, Alderman or Dr. Joiner inject the desired treatment at strategic sites. Patients report that these treatments are highly comfortable; ice can be applied before the injection to minimize any sensation. The overall process is quick and can take as little as 30 minutes, depending on your needs.

In general, most patients have an easy recovery with minimal swelling or bruising. However, in some patients, the cheeks can be sore and feel hard to touch. This usually lasts a week after the injection. If Sculptra® was a part of your treatment plan, you may need to massage the treatment area periodically to ensure best results. Both of our doctors review all post-care instructions with patients to ensure they have all information necessary to achieve best results.

Early unevenness between one side of the face to the other is normal due to swelling. Mild bruising and redness are also common. These after-effects are short-lived, however, and patients report great satisfaction with their facial filler treatment.

FAQ's

After receiving cheek fillers such as Restylane® Lyft, and Voluma, you will see instant, natural-looking improvement. These rejuvenating results last between several months to one year—with some patients seeing results for even longer—depending on the specific filler you choose as well as your unique anatomy and lifestyle.

Many of our patients choose to schedule regular touch-ups. By coming in and receiving these follow up procedures you are guaranteed to further refine your results and prolong lasting restoration.

What’s great about fillers is that the risk of side effects is incredibly low.

If you do experience any side effects, these are generally due to the body’s natural inflammatory response after receiving an injection rather than a reaction to the fillers themselves.

Some patients see swelling, minor bruising, itching or pain, discoloration or redness, and tenderness at the site of injection.

If you experience any of these symptoms, rest assured they generally go away within a matter of days and can be easily treated. Discoloration or redness can be drastically reduced simply by applying makeup or a concealer.

At your consultation, we will discuss all possible side effects and address any lasting concerns.

As we mentioned, while cheek fillers make a great option for patients looking for long-lasting, one time results, more and more patients are choosing fillers due to their many advantages.

As opposed to cheek implants, you will see immediate results without any of the bruising or swelling associated with surgery. There is no downtime and little risk of infection or side effects. Further, fillers are easy to adjust or reverse. Giving Dr. Alderman and Dr. Joiner the chance to ensure you achieve all your cosmetic goals.
